We were tasked with designing the lighting for the Parramatta Rail Link, with a primary focus on public safety. The lighting design needed to be very specific to the task and function, while also feeling bright and welcoming. We carefully integrated light into the architectural detail using a minimal palate of fittings to create luminous volumes that support the project’s ambitions. High-output fluorescent sources housed in dust-tight fixtures with high colour rendering were used to provide direct lighting, while indirect up-lighting was employed to create the illusion of light coming from above. This lighting philosophy was applied throughout the project, both inside and out. The result is a well-lit and inviting transport hub that meets safety standards without being obtrusive.
