Summary

Convene, the renowned hospitality company embarked on an ambitious mission to redefine the workday experience by transforming office spaces into elevated environments reminiscent of luxury hotels. FPOV had the privilege of collaborating with Convene for their inaugural venture outside the United States, specifically at the prestigious 22 Bishopsgate building in London. The Convene 22 Bishopsgate space breaks away from conventional commercial environments, offering a harmonious blend of workplace, hospitality, and residential spaces. At FPOV, we recognised the significance of differentiating between “extrovert” and “introvert” workspaces, tailoring lighting strategies to cater to diverse personality types and work requirements. Furthermore, we approached task areas and transition areas differently, ensuring lighting solutions that addressed the specific needs of each space. By precisely adjusting light levels and ambience, we created a deliberate contrast between extrovert spaces, which were evenly and brightly illuminated, and introvert spaces, which emanated a more intimate and contemplative atmosphere. This distinction provided users with options that aligned with their preferences and workstyles, promoting a sense of individual empowerment.

Task areas were thoughtfully designed with focused lighting from the ceiling plane, providing optimal illumination for working surfaces and fostering productivity. In contrast, transition areas such as corridors were accentuated to highlight artwork and vertical surfaces, curating a visually engaging journey for users as they moved through the space.

Results

Our lighting design successfully transformed Convene's 22 Bishopsgate space into a dynamic and versatile environment that seamlessly integrated work, hospitality, and residential elements. The thoughtful differentiation of lighting between extrovert and introvert spaces, combined with the strategic illumination of task and transition areas, enhanced the overall user experience. By defying traditional workplace norms and harnessing lighting as a key design element, Convene and FPOV have created a workspace that nurtures collaboration, productivity, and wellbeing, setting a new benchmark for the future of office environments. The lighting design aimed to deliver a unique experiential journey as users transitioned between different functions within the space. The carefully calibrated colour temperature struck a delicate balance between the warm ambience of hospitality and residential settings and the functional requirements of a commercial workspace. This intentional choice elevated users' experience and expectations beyond that of a traditional work environment, fostering a sense of inspiration and creativity.
