Understory is an immersive journey through the Rainforest Walk at South Bank, Brisbane, featuring 11 unique stages. Each stage invites visitors to experience nature in new and unexpected ways through soundscapes, lighting, and playful effects such as smoke-filled bubbles and flaming water.

Designed by FPOV, the installation captures the magical essence of the rainforest while encouraging exploration and curiosity. Characters created by FPOV remain hidden during the day, coming to life at night through projection mapping and holographic displays. This innovative combination of technology transforms the rainforest’s natural features into an enchanting fantasy world.

Interactive elements, supported by depth cameras, allow visitors to influence the visuals, ensuring every visit feels unique. The accompanying soundscapes and musical scores further enhance the experience, creating a multisensory adventure that resonates with all ages.

Its adaptability allows it to scale to different settings, ensuring versatility for various applications. Technical Overview

• Projection Mapping: 2-4 video projectors per zone. • Holographic Displays: Up to 25 displays for realistic animations. • Audio Setup: 8 loudspeakers per zone, enhanced by subwoofers. • Atmospheric Effects: 17 smoke machines and 4 low fog machines. • Lighting: Moving lights, LED pixels, LED strip lighting, lasers, and fixed units. • Control Systems: Managed via a network of control computers and a master console.
